Reisdetails van Route 66

Hi everyone!
Time for another journey. This month (April 2-24) my DH decided on driving Route 66 all the way from the starting point in Chicago westbound to the end of the trail in Santa Monica. We took a rental in Chicago, looked for the starting point at Adam's street and made our way down the Motherroad. We crossed 8 US states (Illinois-Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California and decided to visit Las Vegas (Nevada) as well. At some places, Route 66 has been replaced by Interstate I40, but we managed to spot a lot of R66 icons, like the Gemini Giant Muffler Men and the Mill (Wilmington, IL), beautiful wall paintings in Cuba (IL), world's largest Rocking Chair (Fanning, IL), Mule Trading Post (Rolla, IL), Grand Falls (MO), Big Brutus (West Mineral, KS). Lighted Pop Bottle and Round Bar (Arcadia, OK), Blue Whale (Catoosa, OK), Milkbottle Grocery (Oklahoma City, OK). We had coffee in several all-American Diners like Lucille's (Hydra, OK), Midpoint (Adrian, TX), The Zoo (Flagstaff, AZ) and Cruisers (Williams, AZ). Along the way we enjoyed the outdoors as well and paid a visit to Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo TX), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert & Petrified Forest (Arizona), Bearizona (zoo near Williams, AZ), Grand Canyon South Rim. Approaching Las Vegas we visited the Hoover Dam and we've been to the Red Rock Canyon as well. In 2 weeks we have drive almost 4000 kilometers (2278 miles). This trip ended in Loas Angeles/Santa Monica, but we had 7 more days for vacation so we also went to visit Yosemite National Park and ended our journey in San Francisco, where we visited the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, Postcard Row/The Painted Ladies and Lombard Street. Should you ever come to the US, try to visit Yosemite NP, it's nature is overwhelming. We saw a black bear, several deer, waterfalls and the giant sequoia trees.
Route 66 rijden van het beginpunt in Chicago tot aan het eindpunt in Santa Monica (in totaal zo'n 4000 km) stond al een tijdje op de bucketlist en afgelopen april (2015) was het zover. Mocht je dit ooit van plan zijn, neem dan ruim de tijd als je echt alles op en langs de Motherroad wilt zien en bezichtigen en bereid je thuis terdege voor met behulp van een goede (Engelstalige?) reisbeschrijving. Wij hebben in 2 weken de gehele route gereden in een personenauto waarbij we onderweg steeds in hotels logeerden. Route 66 start in Chicago, maar alleen al deze stad is een bezoek van minimaal 1 hele dag waard. De route is in z'n geheel niet helemaal ononderbroken te rijden, op sommige punten (eigenlijk op redelijk veel punten) wordt zij vervangen door de Interstate. Op zich geen probleem, want de Interstate levert tijdwinst op als je geen 4 weken kunt uittrekken voor deze monsterrit. Typische icons die je langs de route (en soms iets verder van de route verwijderd) tegenkomt en beslist niet mag missen zijn o.a. de Muffler Men (voornamelijk te vinden in de staat Illinois), uit z'n krachten gegroeide voorwerpen als de World Largest Rocking Chair (Fanning. Missouri), big Brutus (West-Mineral, Kansas), giant Pop Bottle (Arcadia, Oklahoma) en sommige All-American Diners (zoals bijv. Lucille's Roadhouse in Hydra, Oklahoma)en het Midpoint Café in Adrian (precies halverwege de route). Bezoek ook beslist de Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas en de Jack Rabbit Trading Post (Joseph City, Arizona). In totaal kom je door 8 van de Amerikaanse staten (Illinois-Missouri- Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California).
Hoe verder naar het Westen je komt, des te duidelijker worden de Spaanstalige en Indiaanse invloeden. Onderweg valt er ook veel natuurschoon te bewonderen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de witte eekhoornpopulatie in Marionville, Missouri (niet op de route), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert en Petrified Forest (Arizona) en natuurlijk de Grand Canyon. Mocht je tijd over hebben, maak dan ook een uitstapje naar de staat Nevada en bezoek de Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon en doe een dagje/avondje Las Vegas, dat is zeker de moeite waard, maar bedenk wel: hoe meer je wilt zien, des te meer tijd zul je nodig hebben. Op en langs de Route 66 zijn in verschillende dorpjes Route 66 musea en informatiecenters ingericht en te bezoeken. De dames/heren bij de informatiebalie zijn over het algemeen gepensioneerde Amerikanen en kunnen je fantastische verhalen vertellen over de Route. Plaatsen met een hoog R66-gehalte zijn o.a. Williams (Arizona), Seligman en Kingman (Arizona). Hier zul je ook een aantal icons uit de (teken-)film Cars tegenkomen, die onlosmakelijk verbonden is met R66. Als je van autorijden houdt, is deze route beslist aan te raden, hou echter wel rekening met de Amerikaanse verkeersregels (die toch iets anders zijn dan de Nederlandse) en met het absurde drukke verkeer in de hele grote steden als Chicago, Las Vegas en Los Angeles. Een navigatiesysteem is ook onontbeerlijk op deze route, anders mis je meer dan de helft van de attracties, die er te zien zijn. Zorg uiteraard ook voor een creditcard, daar wordt echt alles mee betaald van benzine tot een ijsje. De Amerikanen zijn over het algemeen erg gastvrij en als je laat weten dat je R66 aan het rijden bent, krijg je vaak tips en informatie over wat er allemaal te zien valt en wat je zeker moet bezoeken. Ze zijn ook zeer geïnteresseerd in jou als persoon en willen altijd weten waar je vandaan komt, dus een praatje is snel gemaakt. In de meeste diners kun je naast lekker eten, ook onbeperkt koffie drinken. Je eerste beker black coffee betaal je uiteraard, maar de refills zijn gratis en worden zonder te vragen bijgeschonken.
Mocht je er nog steeds geen genoeg van krijgen en zijn je vakantiedagen nog steeds niet op, overweeg dan een verlenging aan het eind van de Route, door van Los Angeles via Yosemite National Park naar San Francisco te reizen. Ook dit stukje van de USA is het bezoeken meer dan waard. Het Yosemite NP is werkelijk fantastisch (vonden wij zoveel mooier dan de Grand Canyon) en in SF kun je je tijd ook zeer goed doorbrengen door de plaatselijke attracties te bezoeken (Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Postcard Row/Painted Ladies, Lombard Steet). Kortom, zeer aan te raden!!

Lighted Pop Bottle and Round Bar (Arcadia, OK), Blue Whale (Catoosa, OK), Milkbottle Grocery (Oklahoma City, OK). We had coffee in several all-American Diners like Lucille's (Hydra, OK), Midpoint (Adrian, TX), The Zoo (Flagstaff, AZ) and Cruisers (Williams, AZ). Along the way we enjoyed the outdoors as well and paid a visit to Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo TX), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert & Petrified Forest (Arizona), Bearizona (zoo near Williams, AZ), Grand Canyon South Rim. Approaching Las Vegas we visited the Hoover Dam and we've been to the Red Rock Canyon as well. In 2 weeks we have drive almost 4000 kilometers (2278 miles). This trip ended in Loas Angeles/Santa Monica, but we had 7 more days for vacation so we also went to visit Yosemite National Park and ended our journey in San Francisco, where we visited the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, Postcard Row/The Painted Ladies and Lombard Street. Should you ever come to the US, try to visit Yosemite NP, it's nature is overwhelming. We saw a black bear, several deer, waterfalls and the giant sequoia trees.
Route 66 rijden van het beginpunt in Chicago tot aan het eindpunt in Santa Monica (in totaal zo'n 4000 km) stond al een tijdje op de bucketlist en afgelopen april (2015) was het zover. Mocht je dit ooit van plan zijn, neem dan ruim de tijd als je echt alles op en langs de Motherroad wilt zien en bezichtigen en bereid je thuis terdege voor met behulp van een goede (Engelstalige?) reisbeschrijving. Wij hebben in 2 weken de gehele route gereden in een personenauto waarbij we onderweg steeds in hotels logeerden. Route 66 start in Chicago, maar alleen al deze stad is een bezoek van minimaal 1 hele dag waard. De route is in z'n geheel niet helemaal ononderbroken te rijden, op sommige punten (eigenlijk op redelijk veel punten) wordt zij vervangen door de Interstate. Op zich geen probleem, want de Interstate levert tijdwinst op als je geen 4 weken kunt uittrekken voor deze monsterrit. Typische icons die je langs de route (en soms iets verder van de route verwijderd) tegenkomt en beslist niet mag missen zijn o.a. de Muffler Men (voornamelijk te vinden in de staat Illinois), uit z'n krachten gegroeide voorwerpen als de World Largest Rocking Chair (Fanning. Missouri), big Brutus (West-Mineral, Kansas), giant Pop Bottle (Arcadia, Oklahoma) en sommige All-American Diners (zoals bijv. Lucille's Roadhouse in Hydra, Oklahoma)en het Midpoint Café in Adrian (precies halverwege de route). Bezoek ook beslist de Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas en de Jack Rabbit Trading Post (Joseph City, Arizona). In totaal kom je door 8 van de Amerikaanse staten (Illinois-Missouri- Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California).
Hoe verder naar het Westen je komt, des te duidelijker worden de Spaanstalige en Indiaanse invloeden. Onderweg valt er ook veel natuurschoon te bewonderen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de witte eekhoornpopulatie in Marionville, Missouri (niet op de route), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert en Petrified Forest (Arizona) en natuurlijk de Grand Canyon. Mocht je tijd over hebben, maak dan ook een uitstapje naar de staat Nevada en bezoek de Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon en doe een dagje/avondje Las Vegas, dat is zeker de moeite waard, maar bedenk wel: hoe meer je wilt zien, des te meer tijd zul je nodig hebben. Op en langs de Route 66 zijn in verschillende dorpjes Route 66 musea en informatiecenters ingericht en te bezoeken. De dames/heren bij de informatiebalie zijn over het algemeen gepensioneerde Amerikanen en kunnen je fantastische verhalen vertellen over de Route. Plaatsen met een hoog R66-gehalte zijn o.a. Williams (Arizona), Seligman en Kingman (Arizona). Hier zul je ook een aantal icons uit de (teken-)film Cars tegenkomen, die onlosmakelijk verbonden is met R66. Als je van autorijden houdt, is deze route beslist aan te raden, hou echter wel rekening met de Amerikaanse verkeersregels (die toch iets anders zijn dan de Nederlandse) en met het absurde drukke verkeer in de hele grote steden als Chicago, Las Vegas en Los Angeles. Een navigatiesysteem is ook onontbeerlijk op deze route, anders mis je meer dan de helft van de attracties, die er te zien zijn. Zorg uiteraard ook voor een creditcard, daar wordt echt alles mee betaald van benzine tot een ijsje. De Amerikanen zijn over het algemeen erg gastvrij en als je laat weten dat je R66 aan het rijden bent, krijg je vaak tips en informatie over wat er allemaal te zien valt en wat je zeker moet bezoeken. Ze zijn ook zeer geïnteresseerd in jou als persoon en willen altijd weten waar je vandaan komt, dus een praatje is snel gemaakt. In de meeste diners kun je naast lekker eten, ook onbeperkt koffie drinken. Je eerste beker black coffee betaal je uiteraard, maar de refills zijn gratis en worden zonder te vragen bijgeschonken.
Mocht je er nog steeds geen genoeg van krijgen en zijn je vakantiedagen nog steeds niet op, overweeg dan een verlenging aan het eind van de Route, door van Los Angeles via Yosemite National Park naar San Francisco te reizen. Ook dit stukje van de USA is het bezoeken meer dan waard. Het Yosemite NP is werkelijk fantastisch (vonden wij zoveel mooier dan de Grand Canyon) en in SF kun je je tijd ook zeer goed doorbrengen door de plaatselijke attracties te bezoeken (Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Postcard Row/Painted Ladies, Lombard Steet). Kortom, zeer aan te raden!!

Reisdetails van Route 66

Hi everyone!
Time for another journey. This month (April 2-24) my DH decided on driving Route 66 all the way from the starting point in Chicago westbound to the end of the trail in Santa Monica. We took a rental in Chicago, looked for the starting point at Adam's street and made our way down the Motherroad. We crossed 8 US states (Illinois-Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California and decided to visit Las Vegas (Nevada) as well. At some places, Route 66 has been replaced by Interstate I40, but we managed to spot a lot of R66 icons, like the Gemini Giant Muffler Men and the Mill (Wilmington, IL), beautiful wall paintings in Cuba (IL), world's largest Rocking Chair (Fanning, IL), Mule Trading Post (Rolla, IL), Grand Falls (MO), Big Brutus (West Mineral, KS). Lighted Pop Bottle and Round Bar (Arcadia, OK), Blue Whale (Catoosa, OK), Milkbottle Grocery (Oklahoma City, OK). We had coffee in several all-American Diners like Lucille's (Hydra, OK), Midpoint (Adrian, TX), The Zoo (Flagstaff, AZ) and Cruisers (Williams, AZ). Along the way we enjoyed the outdoors as well and paid a visit to Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo TX), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert & Petrified Forest (Arizona), Bearizona (zoo near Williams, AZ), Grand Canyon South Rim. Approaching Las Vegas we visited the Hoover Dam and we've been to the Red Rock Canyon as well. In 2 weeks we have drive almost 4000 kilometers (2278 miles). This trip ended in Loas Angeles/Santa Monica, but we had 7 more days for vacation so we also went to visit Yosemite National Park and ended our journey in San Francisco, where we visited the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, Postcard Row/The Painted Ladies and Lombard Street. Should you ever come to the US, try to visit Yosemite NP, it's nature is overwhelming. We saw a black bear, several deer, waterfalls and the giant sequoia trees.
Route 66 rijden van het beginpunt in Chicago tot aan het eindpunt in Santa Monica (in totaal zo'n 4000 km) stond al een tijdje op de bucketlist en afgelopen april (2015) was het zover. Mocht je dit ooit van plan zijn, neem dan ruim de tijd als je echt alles op en langs de Motherroad wilt zien en bezichtigen en bereid je thuis terdege voor met behulp van een goede (Engelstalige?) reisbeschrijving. Wij hebben in 2 weken de gehele route gereden in een personenauto waarbij we onderweg steeds in hotels logeerden. Route 66 start in Chicago, maar alleen al deze stad is een bezoek van minimaal 1 hele dag waard. De route is in z'n geheel niet helemaal ononderbroken te rijden, op sommige punten (eigenlijk op redelijk veel punten) wordt zij vervangen door de Interstate. Op zich geen probleem, want de Interstate levert tijdwinst op als je geen 4 weken kunt uittrekken voor deze monsterrit. Typische icons die je langs de route (en soms iets verder van de route verwijderd) tegenkomt en beslist niet mag missen zijn o.a. de Muffler Men (voornamelijk te vinden in de staat Illinois), uit z'n krachten gegroeide voorwerpen als de World Largest Rocking Chair (Fanning. Missouri), big Brutus (West-Mineral, Kansas), giant Pop Bottle (Arcadia, Oklahoma) en sommige All-American Diners (zoals bijv. Lucille's Roadhouse in Hydra, Oklahoma)en het Midpoint Café in Adrian (precies halverwege de route). Bezoek ook beslist de Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas en de Jack Rabbit Trading Post (Joseph City, Arizona). In totaal kom je door 8 van de Amerikaanse staten (Illinois-Missouri- Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California).
Hoe verder naar het Westen je komt, des te duidelijker worden de Spaanstalige en Indiaanse invloeden. Onderweg valt er ook veel natuurschoon te bewonderen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de witte eekhoornpopulatie in Marionville, Missouri (niet op de route), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert en Petrified Forest (Arizona) en natuurlijk de Grand Canyon. Mocht je tijd over hebben, maak dan ook een uitstapje naar de staat Nevada en bezoek de Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon en doe een dagje/avondje Las Vegas, dat is zeker de moeite waard, maar bedenk wel: hoe meer je wilt zien, des te meer tijd zul je nodig hebben. Op en langs de Route 66 zijn in verschillende dorpjes Route 66 musea en informatiecenters ingericht en te bezoeken. De dames/heren bij de informatiebalie zijn over het algemeen gepensioneerde Amerikanen en kunnen je fantastische verhalen vertellen over de Route. Plaatsen met een hoog R66-gehalte zijn o.a. Williams (Arizona), Seligman en Kingman (Arizona). Hier zul je ook een aantal icons uit de (teken-)film Cars tegenkomen, die onlosmakelijk verbonden is met R66. Als je van autorijden houdt, is deze route beslist aan te raden, hou echter wel rekening met de Amerikaanse verkeersregels (die toch iets anders zijn dan de Nederlandse) en met het absurde drukke verkeer in de hele grote steden als Chicago, Las Vegas en Los Angeles. Een navigatiesysteem is ook onontbeerlijk op deze route, anders mis je meer dan de helft van de attracties, die er te zien zijn. Zorg uiteraard ook voor een creditcard, daar wordt echt alles mee betaald van benzine tot een ijsje. De Amerikanen zijn over het algemeen erg gastvrij en als je laat weten dat je R66 aan het rijden bent, krijg je vaak tips en informatie over wat er allemaal te zien valt en wat je zeker moet bezoeken. Ze zijn ook zeer geïnteresseerd in jou als persoon en willen altijd weten waar je vandaan komt, dus een praatje is snel gemaakt. In de meeste diners kun je naast lekker eten, ook onbeperkt koffie drinken. Je eerste beker black coffee betaal je uiteraard, maar de refills zijn gratis en worden zonder te vragen bijgeschonken.
Mocht je er nog steeds geen genoeg van krijgen en zijn je vakantiedagen nog steeds niet op, overweeg dan een verlenging aan het eind van de Route, door van Los Angeles via Yosemite National Park naar San Francisco te reizen. Ook dit stukje van de USA is het bezoeken meer dan waard. Het Yosemite NP is werkelijk fantastisch (vonden wij zoveel mooier dan de Grand Canyon) en in SF kun je je tijd ook zeer goed doorbrengen door de plaatselijke attracties te bezoeken (Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Postcard Row/Painted Ladies, Lombard Steet). Kortom, zeer aan te raden!!

Hi everyone!
Time for another journey. This month (April 2-24) my DH decided on driving Route 66 all the way from the starting point in Chicago westbound to the end of the trail in Santa Monica. We took a rental in Chicago, looked for the starting point at Adam's street and made our way down the Motherroad. We crossed 8 US states (Illinois-Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California and decided to visit Las Vegas (Nevada) as well. At some places, Route 66 has been replaced by Interstate I40, but we managed to spot a lot of R66 icons, like the Gemini Giant Muffler Men and the Mill (Wilmington, IL), beautiful wall paintings in Cuba (IL), world's largest Rocking Chair (Fanning, IL), Mule Trading Post (Rolla, IL), Grand Falls (MO), Big Brutus (West Mineral, KS). Lighted Pop Bottle and Round Bar (Arcadia, OK), Blue Whale (Catoosa, OK), Milkbottle Grocery (Oklahoma City, OK). We had coffee in several all-American Diners like Lucille's (Hydra, OK), Midpoint (Adrian, TX), The Zoo (Flagstaff, AZ) and Cruisers (Williams, AZ). Along the way we enjoyed the outdoors as well and paid a visit to Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo TX), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert & Petrified Forest (Arizona), Bearizona (zoo near Williams, AZ), Grand Canyon South Rim. Approaching Las Vegas we visited the Hoover Dam and we've been to the Red Rock Canyon as well. In 2 weeks we have drive almost 4000 kilometers (2278 miles). This trip ended in Loas Angeles/Santa Monica, but we had 7 more days for vacation so we also went to visit Yosemite National Park and ended our journey in San Francisco, where we visited the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, Postcard Row/The Painted Ladies and Lombard Street. Should you ever come to the US, try to visit Yosemite NP, it's nature is overwhelming. We saw a black bear, several deer, waterfalls and the giant sequoia trees.
Route 66 rijden van het beginpunt in Chicago tot aan het eindpunt in Santa Monica (in totaal zo'n 4000 km) stond al een tijdje op de bucketlist en afgelopen april (2015) was het zover. Mocht je dit ooit van plan zijn, neem dan ruim de tijd als je echt alles op en langs de Motherroad wilt zien en bezichtigen en bereid je thuis terdege voor met behulp van een goede (Engelstalige?) reisbeschrijving. Wij hebben in 2 weken de gehele route gereden in een personenauto waarbij we onderweg steeds in hotels logeerden. Route 66 start in Chicago, maar alleen al deze stad is een bezoek van minimaal 1 hele dag waard. De route is in z'n geheel niet helemaal ononderbroken te rijden, op sommige punten (eigenlijk op redelijk veel punten) wordt zij vervangen door de Interstate. Op zich geen probleem, want de Interstate levert tijdwinst op als je geen 4 weken kunt uittrekken voor deze monsterrit. Typische icons die je langs de route (en soms iets verder van de route verwijderd) tegenkomt en beslist niet mag missen zijn o.a. de Muffler Men (voornamelijk te vinden in de staat Illinois), uit z'n krachten gegroeide voorwerpen als de World Largest Rocking Chair (Fanning. Missouri), big Brutus (West-Mineral, Kansas), giant Pop Bottle (Arcadia, Oklahoma) en sommige All-American Diners (zoals bijv. Lucille's Roadhouse in Hydra, Oklahoma)en het Midpoint Café in Adrian (precies halverwege de route). Bezoek ook beslist de Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas en de Jack Rabbit Trading Post (Joseph City, Arizona). In totaal kom je door 8 van de Amerikaanse staten (Illinois-Missouri- Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California).
Hoe verder naar het Westen je komt, des te duidelijker worden de Spaanstalige en Indiaanse invloeden. Onderweg valt er ook veel natuurschoon te bewonderen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de witte eekhoornpopulatie in Marionville, Missouri (niet op de route), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert en Petrified Forest (Arizona) en natuurlijk de Grand Canyon. Mocht je tijd over hebben, maak dan ook een uitstapje naar de staat Nevada en bezoek de Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon en doe een dagje/avondje Las Vegas, dat is zeker de moeite waard, maar bedenk wel: hoe meer je wilt zien, des te meer tijd zul je nodig hebben. Op en langs de Route 66 zijn in verschillende dorpjes Route 66 musea en informatiecenters ingericht en te bezoeken. De dames/heren bij de informatiebalie zijn over het algemeen gepensioneerde Amerikanen en kunnen je fantastische verhalen vertellen over de Route. Plaatsen met een hoog R66-gehalte zijn o.a. Williams (Arizona), Seligman en Kingman (Arizona). Hier zul je ook een aantal icons uit de (teken-)film Cars tegenkomen, die onlosmakelijk verbonden is met R66. Als je van autorijden houdt, is deze route beslist aan te raden, hou echter wel rekening met de Amerikaanse verkeersregels (die toch iets anders zijn dan de Nederlandse) en met het absurde drukke verkeer in de hele grote steden als Chicago, Las Vegas en Los Angeles. Een navigatiesysteem is ook onontbeerlijk op deze route, anders mis je meer dan de helft van de attracties, die er te zien zijn. Zorg uiteraard ook voor een creditcard, daar wordt echt alles mee betaald van benzine tot een ijsje. De Amerikanen zijn over het algemeen erg gastvrij en als je laat weten dat je R66 aan het rijden bent, krijg je vaak tips en informatie over wat er allemaal te zien valt en wat je zeker moet bezoeken. Ze zijn ook zeer geïnteresseerd in jou als persoon en willen altijd weten waar je vandaan komt, dus een praatje is snel gemaakt. In de meeste diners kun je naast lekker eten, ook onbeperkt koffie drinken. Je eerste beker black coffee betaal je uiteraard, maar de refills zijn gratis en worden zonder te vragen bijgeschonken.
Mocht je er nog steeds geen genoeg van krijgen en zijn je vakantiedagen nog steeds niet op, overweeg dan een verlenging aan het eind van de Route, door van Los Angeles via Yosemite National Park naar San Francisco te reizen. Ook dit stukje van de USA is het bezoeken meer dan waard. Het Yosemite NP is werkelijk fantastisch (vonden wij zoveel mooier dan de Grand Canyon) en in SF kun je je tijd ook zeer goed doorbrengen door de plaatselijke attracties te bezoeken (Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Postcard Row/Painted Ladies, Lombard Steet). Kortom, zeer aan te raden!!

Route 66 rijden van het beginpunt in Chicago tot aan het eindpunt in Santa Monica (in totaal zo'n 4000 km) stond al een tijdje op de bucketlist en afgelopen april (2015) was het zover. Mocht je dit ooit van plan zijn, neem dan ruim de tijd als je echt alles op en langs de Motherroad wilt zien en bezichtigen en bereid je thuis terdege voor met behulp van een goede (Engelstalige?) reisbeschrijving. Wij hebben in 2 weken de gehele route gereden in een personenauto waarbij we onderweg steeds in hotels logeerden. Route 66 start in Chicago, maar alleen al deze stad is een bezoek van minimaal 1 hele dag waard. De route is in z'n geheel niet helemaal ononderbroken te rijden, op sommige punten (eigenlijk op redelijk veel punten) wordt zij vervangen door de Interstate. Op zich geen probleem, want de Interstate levert tijdwinst op als je geen 4 weken kunt uittrekken voor deze monsterrit. Typische icons die je langs de route (en soms iets verder van de route verwijderd) tegenkomt en beslist niet mag missen zijn o.a. de Muffler Men (voornamelijk te vinden in de staat Illinois), uit z'n krachten gegroeide voorwerpen als de World Largest Rocking Chair (Fanning. Missouri), big Brutus (West-Mineral, Kansas), giant Pop Bottle (Arcadia, Oklahoma) en sommige All-American Diners (zoals bijv. Lucille's Roadhouse in Hydra, Oklahoma)en het Midpoint Café in Adrian (precies halverwege de route). Bezoek ook beslist de Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas en de Jack Rabbit Trading Post (Joseph City, Arizona). In totaal kom je door 8 van de Amerikaanse staten (Illinois-Missouri- Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California).
Hoe verder naar het Westen je komt, des te duidelijker worden de Spaanstalige en Indiaanse invloeden. Onderweg valt er ook veel natuurschoon te bewonderen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de witte eekhoornpopulatie in Marionville, Missouri (niet op de route), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert en Petrified Forest (Arizona) en natuurlijk de Grand Canyon. Mocht je tijd over hebben, maak dan ook een uitstapje naar de staat Nevada en bezoek de Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon en doe een dagje/avondje Las Vegas, dat is zeker de moeite waard, maar bedenk wel: hoe meer je wilt zien, des te meer tijd zul je nodig hebben. Op en langs de Route 66 zijn in verschillende dorpjes Route 66 musea en informatiecenters ingericht en te bezoeken. De dames/heren bij de informatiebalie zijn over het algemeen gepensioneerde Amerikanen en kunnen je fantastische verhalen vertellen over de Route. Plaatsen met een hoog R66-gehalte zijn o.a. Williams (Arizona), Seligman en Kingman (Arizona). Hier zul je ook een aantal icons uit de (teken-)film Cars tegenkomen, die onlosmakelijk verbonden is met R66. Als je van autorijden houdt, is deze route beslist aan te raden, hou echter wel rekening met de Amerikaanse verkeersregels (die toch iets anders zijn dan de Nederlandse) en met het absurde drukke verkeer in de hele grote steden als Chicago, Las Vegas en Los Angeles. Een navigatiesysteem is ook onontbeerlijk op deze route, anders mis je meer dan de helft van de attracties, die er te zien zijn. Zorg uiteraard ook voor een creditcard, daar wordt echt alles mee betaald van benzine tot een ijsje. De Amerikanen zijn over het algemeen erg gastvrij en als je laat weten dat je R66 aan het rijden bent, krijg je vaak tips en informatie over wat er allemaal te zien valt en wat je zeker moet bezoeken. Ze zijn ook zeer geïnteresseerd in jou als persoon en willen altijd weten waar je vandaan komt, dus een praatje is snel gemaakt. In de meeste diners kun je naast lekker eten, ook onbeperkt koffie drinken. Je eerste beker black coffee betaal je uiteraard, maar de refills zijn gratis en worden zonder te vragen bijgeschonken.
Mocht je er nog steeds geen genoeg van krijgen en zijn je vakantiedagen nog steeds niet op, overweeg dan een verlenging aan het eind van de Route, door van Los Angeles via Yosemite National Park naar San Francisco te reizen. Ook dit stukje van de USA is het bezoeken meer dan waard. Het Yosemite NP is werkelijk fantastisch (vonden wij zoveel mooier dan de Grand Canyon) en in SF kun je je tijd ook zeer goed doorbrengen door de plaatselijke attracties te bezoeken (Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Postcard Row/Painted Ladies, Lombard Steet). Kortom, zeer aan te raden!!

Time for another journey. This month (April 2-24) my DH decided on driving Route 66 all the way from the starting point in Chicago westbound to the end of the trail in Santa Monica. We took a rental in Chicago, looked for the starting point at Adam's street and made our way down the Motherroad. We crossed 8 US states (Illinois-Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California and decided to visit Las Vegas (Nevada) as well. At some places, Route 66 has been replaced by Interstate I40, but we managed to spot a lot of R66 icons, like the Gemini Giant Muffler Men and the Mill (Wilmington, IL), beautiful wall paintings in Cuba (IL), world's largest Rocking Chair (Fanning, IL), Mule Trading Post (Rolla, IL), Grand Falls (MO), Big Brutus (West Mineral, KS). Lighted Pop Bottle and Round Bar (Arcadia, OK), Blue Whale (Catoosa, OK), Milkbottle Grocery (Oklahoma City, OK). We had coffee in several all-American Diners like Lucille's (Hydra, OK), Midpoint (Adrian, TX), The Zoo (Flagstaff, AZ) and Cruisers (Williams, AZ). Along the way we enjoyed the outdoors as well and paid a visit to Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo TX), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert & Petrified Forest (Arizona), Bearizona (zoo near Williams, AZ), Grand Canyon South Rim. Approaching Las Vegas we visited the Hoover Dam and we've been to the Red Rock Canyon as well. In 2 weeks we have drive almost 4000 kilometers (2278 miles). This trip ended in Loas Angeles/Santa Monica, but we had 7 more days for vacation so we also went to visit Yosemite National Park and ended our journey in San Francisco, where we visited the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, Postcard Row/The Painted Ladies and Lombard Street. Should you ever come to the US, try to visit Yosemite NP, it's nature is overwhelming. We saw a black bear, several deer, waterfalls and the giant sequoia trees.
Route 66 rijden van het beginpunt in Chicago tot aan het eindpunt in Santa Monica (in totaal zo'n 4000 km) stond al een tijdje op de bucketlist en afgelopen april (2015) was het zover. Mocht je dit ooit van plan zijn, neem dan ruim de tijd als je echt alles op en langs de Motherroad wilt zien en bezichtigen en bereid je thuis terdege voor met behulp van een goede (Engelstalige?) reisbeschrijving. Wij hebben in 2 weken de gehele route gereden in een personenauto waarbij we onderweg steeds in hotels logeerden. Route 66 start in Chicago, maar alleen al deze stad is een bezoek van minimaal 1 hele dag waard. De route is in z'n geheel niet helemaal ononderbroken te rijden, op sommige punten (eigenlijk op redelijk veel punten) wordt zij vervangen door de Interstate. Op zich geen probleem, want de Interstate levert tijdwinst op als je geen 4 weken kunt uittrekken voor deze monsterrit. Typische icons die je langs de route (en soms iets verder van de route verwijderd) tegenkomt en beslist niet mag missen zijn o.a. de Muffler Men (voornamelijk te vinden in de staat Illinois), uit z'n krachten gegroeide voorwerpen als de World Largest Rocking Chair (Fanning. Missouri), big Brutus (West-Mineral, Kansas), giant Pop Bottle (Arcadia, Oklahoma) en sommige All-American Diners (zoals bijv. Lucille's Roadhouse in Hydra, Oklahoma)en het Midpoint Café in Adrian (precies halverwege de route). Bezoek ook beslist de Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas en de Jack Rabbit Trading Post (Joseph City, Arizona). In totaal kom je door 8 van de Amerikaanse staten (Illinois-Missouri- Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-California).
Hoe verder naar het Westen je komt, des te duidelijker worden de Spaanstalige en Indiaanse invloeden. Onderweg valt er ook veel natuurschoon te bewonderen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de witte eekhoornpopulatie in Marionville, Missouri (niet op de route), Palo Duro Canyon (Texas), Painted Desert en Petrified Forest (Arizona) en natuurlijk de Grand Canyon. Mocht je tijd over hebben, maak dan ook een uitstapje naar de staat Nevada en bezoek de Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon en doe een dagje/avondje Las Vegas, dat is zeker de moeite waard, maar bedenk wel: hoe meer je wilt zien, des te meer tijd zul je nodig hebben. Op en langs de Route 66 zijn in verschillende dorpjes Route 66 musea en informatiecenters ingericht en te bezoeken. De dames/heren bij de informatiebalie zijn over het algemeen gepensioneerde Amerikanen en kunnen je fantastische verhalen vertellen over de Route. Plaatsen met een hoog R66-gehalte zijn o.a. Williams (Arizona), Seligman en Kingman (Arizona). Hier zul je ook een aantal icons uit de (teken-)film Cars tegenkomen, die onlosmakelijk verbonden is met R66. Als je van autorijden houdt, is deze route beslist aan te raden, hou echter wel rekening met de Amerikaanse verkeersregels (die toch iets anders zijn dan de Nederlandse) en met het absurde drukke verkeer in de hele grote steden als Chicago, Las Vegas en Los Angeles. Een navigatiesysteem is ook onontbeerlijk op deze route, anders mis je meer dan de helft van de attracties, die er te zien zijn. Zorg uiteraard ook voor een creditcard, daar wordt echt alles mee betaald van benzine tot een ijsje. De Amerikanen zijn over het algemeen erg gastvrij en als je laat weten dat je R66 aan het rijden bent, krijg je vaak tips en informatie over wat er allemaal te zien valt en wat je zeker moet bezoeken. Ze zijn ook zeer geïnteresseerd in jou als persoon en willen altijd weten waar je vandaan komt, dus een praatje is snel gemaakt. In de meeste diners kun je naast lekker eten, ook onbeperkt koffie drinken. Je eerste beker black coffee betaal je uiteraard, maar de refills zijn gratis en worden zonder te vragen bijgeschonken.
Mocht je er nog steeds geen genoeg van krijgen en zijn je vakantiedagen nog steeds niet op, overweeg dan een verlenging aan het eind van de Route, door van Los Angeles via Yosemite National Park naar San Francisco te reizen. Ook dit stukje van de USA is het bezoeken meer dan waard. Het Yosemite NP is werkelijk fantastisch (vonden wij zoveel mooier dan de Grand Canyon) en in SF kun je je tijd ook zeer goed doorbrengen door de plaatselijke attracties te bezoeken (Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Postcard Row/Painted Ladies, Lombard Steet). Kortom, zeer aan te raden!!
