17 December 2007 | China, Peking
China, Beijing
In 2007 we were so lucky to get another vacation. In December we went for 8 days to Beijing, capital of China, to do some Christmas shopping. My husband wanted to see this city before the Olympic games would start in 2008 and our travel agency had a very attractive offer, that we just couldn't refuse. The only problem was: in my job I am never allowed to take some days off in the month of December, let alone a whole week! Fortunately my supervisor gave me permission (if I would keep my mouth shut) and we immediately seized the oppertunity to book this trip.
December 17, 2007 we arrived at daybreak at the Tianammen Square. It was freezing at that time of day, we were so cold, the sun hadn't even risen, but it was a beautiful experience to see the sun rise over the square. We also climbed the Great Wall (that is: I only took some steps and then went for a nice cup of tea, waiting for the rest of the group to complete their tour, but Rob walked all the way up and discovered even some restrooms at the top of The Wall *lol*. Also we went to the National Zoo and spent a lot of time observing the Giant Panda bears. These are such funny animals, I am so happy to have seen them with my own eyes, eventhough it was in captivity and not in the wild, where they would be even harder to discover, since they are almost extinct. In fact we did very little shopping, because the English language is hardly nowhere spoken in Beijing, so it is very difficult to explain what you are looking for, if no one can understand English!
